Rational Interactions in Multiagent Environments: Communication
نویسنده
چکیده
We address the issue of rational communicative behavior among autonomous intelligent agents that have to make decisions as to what, to whom, and how to communicate. We treat communicative actions as aimed at increasing the eeciency of interaction among agents. We postulate that a rational speaker design a speech act so as to maximally increase the beneet obtained as the result of the interaction. We quantify the gain in the quality of interaction as the expected utility, and we present a framework that allows an agent to compute the expected utility of various communicative actions. Our framework uses the Recursive Modeling Method as the representation of the agent's state of knowledge, including the agent's preferences, abilities and beliefs about the world, as well as the beliefs the agent has about the other agents, the beliefs it has about the other agents' beliefs, and so on. A decision-theoretic pragmatics of a communicative act can be then deened as the transformation it induces on the agent's state of knowledge about its decision-making situation. This transformation leads to a change in the quality of the interaction, expressed in terms of the beneet to the agent. We analyze decision-theoretic pragmatics of a number of important communicative acts, and investigate their expected utility using examples.

A Scheme for Agent Collaboration in Open Multiagent Environments
In multiagent planning, an agent sometimes needs to collaborate with others to construct complex plans, or to accomplish large organizational tasks which it cannot do alone. Since each agent in a group may have incorrect beliefs about the world and incomplete knowledge, and because agent's abilities differ, constructing a coordinated collaborative plan among agents is a difficult proposition. I...
متن کاملStability and Strategic Time-Dependent Behaviour in Multiagent Systems
Temporal reasoning and strategic behaviour are important abilities of multiagent systems. We introduce a game-theoretic framework suitable for modelling selfish and rational agents which can store and reason about the evolution of an environment, and act according to their interests. Our aim is to identify stable interactions: those where no agent has a benefit from changing his behaviour to an...
متن کاملEnvironments for Multiagent Systems
There is a growing awareness in the multiagent systems research community that the environment plays a prominent role in multiagent systems. Originating from research on behavior-based agent systems and situated multiagent systems, the importance of the environment in multiagent systems is now gradually accepted in the multiagent system community in general. The aim of the AgentLink Technical F...

Modern computing systems are distributed, large and heterogeneous. Computers, other devices and humans are very tightly connected with each other and therefore it would be more preferable to handle these entities more as agents as stand-alone systems. One goal of the artificial intelligence is to understand interactions between entities, whether they are artificial or natural, and how to make g...
متن کاملCommunication in Domains with Unreliable, Single-Channel, Low-Bandwidth Communication
In most multiagent systems with communicating agents, the agents have the luxury of using reliable, multi-step negotiation protocols. They can do so primarily when communication is reliable and the cost of communication relative to other actions is small. Conversely, this paper considers multiagent environments with unreliable, high-cost communication. This paper presents techniques for dealing...
